The role
This role sits at the head of the group that operates Vercel's CDN, proxy, and edge caching stack, which handles every inbound request across the platform. The manager is accountable both for keeping that infrastructure fast, reliable, and affordable, and for turning company goals into a concrete team roadmap. It is a people-leadership position where hands-on coding is occasional rather than the default.
What you would do
- Run the edge delivery infrastructure with a focus on latency, uptime, and infrastructure spend
- Set the team's direction and map it to product and business priorities
- Hire, develop, and coach engineers while keeping trust and autonomy high
- Resolve disagreements within the team by weighing input and driving a decision
- Give direct, timely feedback and set clear expectations for the team
- Partner across the organization to keep technical plans in step with company needs
- Write code selectively for prototypes or to remove blockers
What they asked for
- 8+ years building and running large distributed systems
- 3+ years leading engineers, including managing other managers as a plus
- Track record leading CDN, proxy, caching, or similarly high-throughput low-latency systems
- Ability to convert business objectives into technical strategy and align several groups
- Solid grounding in HTTP, TLS, caching approaches, load shedding, capacity planning, observability, and cost control
- Experience building psychological safety and candid feedback habits on a team
Nice to have
- Hands-on experience with edge runtimes built on Go, Lua, or Node
- Experience running efficient, high-signal hiring processes
- Working with product and marketing teams on customer-facing messaging
