Design Engineer

The role

This is a design-engineering seat on the AI Gateway team, a product that lets developers reach many models through a single key. The person sits alongside a product manager and a dedicated engineering group, and draws on the wider design organization for critique.

What you would do

• Shape and construct the path from picking a model through first successful call and daily production use
• Build finished experiences across web pages, the admin console, command-line tooling, and programmatic interfaces
• Turn complex model, routing, spending, and security controls into clear patterns that can scale to new providers
• Gather feedback from customers and interpret product metrics to set goals and choose tradeoffs
• Keep shipped work polished, including accessibility, speed, reliability, and telemetry
• Use AI coding assistants to prototype quickly while testing and debugging everything that goes live

What they asked for

• Hands-on experience building production web apps with React and TypeScript
• Comfort working inside a large, established codebase
• Demonstrable visual and interaction skill with technical or data-dense products
• Ability to move across GUI, CLI, API behavior, and low-level implementation
• Habit of using research and metrics to decide direction and revise when data shifts
• Able to explain and own code produced with AI tools
• Portfolio evidence of what you personally designed, built, and iterated after release; non-traditional backgrounds welcome

Nice to have

• Background in developer tools, infrastructure, model marketplaces, or observability
• Familiarity with AI models, inference providers, or safety guardrails
• Work with APIs, terminal tools, structured content, or agent-facing interfaces
• Prior project built on Vercel's AI SDK or this gateway
