Stripe

AI Engineer

Embedded engineer who builds AI agents and internal automation that help Stripe's solutions architects work faster.

The role

This role sits within Stripe's Solutions Architecture group, where technical specialists help major clients shape and verify their technical plans. The engineer works side by side with those practitioners to create internal software, automation, and custom demo assets that raise the team's output. Success is judged by how much faster the group works and how widely its tools get adopted.

What you would do

  • Work with architects, leadership, product, and engineering to turn loosely defined business requests into concrete engineering scopes.
  • Judge where language models and agent-based automation truly save time, avoiding adoption driven by novelty.
  • Design and construct internal agents and workflow tools covering discovery, solution design, demos, customer work, pipeline, and product coordination.
  • Take prototypes that architects and managers have built and convert them into reliable, maintainable production software.
  • Spot repeated friction across architect workflows and build fixes before anyone asks for them.
  • Produce demo environments, proof-of-concept applications, and bespoke assets for high-priority customer engagements.
  • Write documentation so colleagues can adopt, modify, and extend the systems you create.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain backend services that span several repositories and infrastructure setups.

What they asked for

  • Four or more years building and shipping production software.
  • Solid backend fundamentals: diagnosing broken systems, following problems across services, and understanding how data moves.
  • Hands-on history creating AI agents, LLM-driven utilities, or automated workflows that go well beyond simple prompting.
  • Track record of scoping and finishing projects with limited supervision in a quick-moving, multi-team setting.
  • Working knowledge of at least two among Ruby, Node.js, Python, and Next.js.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP, covering deployment, monitoring, and foundational DevOps practice.
  • Prior experience building internal software, developer platforms, or automation pipelines.
  • Comfort moving between several codebases and technology stacks at the same time.
  • Regular use of AI coding assistants, while still able to debug and reason through problems independently.
  • Clear writing and speaking; able to explain technical choices to non-engineers and collaborate smoothly across functions.

Nice to have

  • Experience building systems that non-engineers can extend, such as platforms, low-code frameworks, or templating systems.
  • Background in solutions, sales, or GTM engineering, or in product engineering alongside customers and revenue teams.
  • Understanding of Stripe's APIs and products, or of the payments and fintech domain.
  • Integration experience with platforms like Salesforce or Gong.
  • Proven record of internal tools spreading beyond their original team.
  • Consulting, professional services, or similar roles that combine technical depth with commercial context.
