Replit

Staff Software Engineer, Agentic Commerce & Payments

Staff-level engineer leading the architecture of a platform that lets Replit Agent users discover, buy, and manage business services with verifiable outcomes.

The role

This Staff role sits on Replit's Money team and owns the technical direction for commerce features that let businesses purchase software and services directly through the agent. It builds on existing payment acceptance work and extends it into agent-driven buying, spanning vendor integrations, agent tooling, and post-purchase management. The position is hands-on and cross-functional, coordinating partners, product, and security while mentoring other engineers.

What you would do

  • Drive end-to-end agent purchasing flows, from interpreting intent and showing prices to collecting authorization and confirming delivery
  • Create reusable integration layers so new merchants and vendors can be added without bespoke work each time
  • Extend existing payment integrations to support new buying experiences
  • Design agent-facing interfaces with scoped permissions, spending caps, and confirmation steps for high-impact actions
  • Work with product and security on enterprise controls like access roles, approval chains, and audit records
  • Handle the full post-checkout lifecycle, including provisioning, renewals, cancellations, refunds, and reconciliation
  • Build reliable transaction handling covering duplicate protection, event verification, and recovery from partial failures
  • Set technical strategy, break ambiguous work into staged milestones, and mentor engineers through reviews and ownership of production systems

What they asked for

  • Track record of leading complex customer-facing platform work at Staff level from design through production across several teams
  • Strong system design ability spanning API contracts, data modeling, and distributed workflows
  • Hands-on experience with third-party integrations that involve async events, retries, and shifting provider behavior
  • Good product instincts for simplifying multi-step processes while protecting correctness
  • Security-minded handling of credentials, sensitive data, and actions taken on behalf of users or organizations
  • Ability to align cross-functional groups and document decisions without formal authority
  • History of mentoring engineers and raising standards for architecture and operations
  • Comfortable using AI coding assistants while owning the quality and safety of shipped code

Nice to have

  • Background building marketplaces, procurement tools, or multi-vendor purchasing products
  • Experience with agent tool use or evaluation of multi-step agent actions
  • Knowledge of purchase lifecycle mechanics such as subscriptions, provisioning, and refunds
  • Enterprise features like approval workflows, budget limits, or audit logging
  • Work with Stripe or comparable payment platforms and partner ecosystems
