Android Software Engineer, Consumer Engineering

Builds and scales native Android consumer experiences in Kotlin for Reddit's discovery, community, and growth teams, mentoring peers along the way.

The role

This is a centralized hiring role that places Android engineers across several consumer teams at Reddit, covering feed, creator, growth, monetization, and trust areas. The work sits where large distributed systems meet everyday user journeys, and engineers partner closely with product, design, data science, ML, and backend colleagues.

What you would do

  • Create and refine Android features that let users find, consume, produce, and interact with content and communities
  • Own initiatives end to end, from defining the product and designing the technical approach through experimentation and launch
  • Work with adjacent disciplines to set direction, turn platform capabilities into usable interfaces, and measure impact
  • Raise the bar on Android architecture, speed, stability, accessibility, developer tooling, and team standards
  • Coach fellow engineers and lead cross-team technical efforts

What they asked for

  • Hands-on experience shipping native Android apps in Kotlin for a large consumer audience
  • Solid grasp of Android frameworks and how to structure app architecture
  • Writes clean, testable code and is skilled at debugging, tuning performance, and keeping systems reliable
  • Has designed mobile features and weighed architectural trade-offs from backend APIs through the UI layer
  • Comfortable with experiments, feature flags, instrumentation, and product or quality metrics
  • Communicates trade-offs clearly and builds alignment with stakeholders

Nice to have

  • Exposure to Jetpack Compose
  • Experience with Android accessibility work
  • Background with Media3, ExoPlayer, MediaCodec, or streaming protocols such as HLS or DASH
  • Work on recommendation systems or ML-powered products
