Director of Engineering, Core & Ads Serving Platform

Leads the engineering organization behind Pinterest's core content and ads serving systems, setting multi-year architecture for reliability, latency, and cost.

The role

This director-level leader owns the strategy and delivery of the systems that route content and advertising to every Pinterest surface at very large scale. The role sits between product, ML, and infrastructure teams, turning business goals into a multi-year technical plan. The leader also manages a sizable group of engineers and engineering managers.

What you would do

  • Define the long-range technical and operating direction for the serving platform, tied to company investment priorities
  • Grow and guide a large group of engineers and managers toward strong engineering quality and fast shipping
  • Work with senior product, ML, and infrastructure leaders to set priorities and settle tradeoffs across revenue, engagement, and safety goals
  • Modernize the serving stack to improve reliability, speed, and per-unit cost while speeding up product iteration
  • Set measurable platform targets such as latency, uptime, and cost per impression, and own delivery against them
  • Apply AI tools to speed up system analysis, design exploration, debugging, and documentation, while keeping output accurate

What they asked for

  • At least five years leading large engineering organizations, including setting direction, driving delivery, and developing team members
  • Eight or more years of relevant industry experience
  • Substantial background running engineering teams that own large-scale serving or delivery infrastructure, with solid knowledge of distributed systems and performance tradeoffs
  • Track record converting business objectives into technical roadmaps and completing complex, multi-year efforts
  • Strong people leadership: grows other leaders, builds an inclusive team, and sustains high trust alongside high accountability
  • Hands-on use of AI and LLM tooling to raise engineering speed and quality, with a disciplined method for checking results
  • Strong communicator who can win over senior cross-functional partners and explain technical tradeoffs to non-technical audiences
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a computing or engineering discipline, or equivalent hands-on experience
