The role
This role sits on the team that runs Perplexity's billing and monetization infrastructure, which meters, budgets, and settles costs for agent actions across consumer and enterprise plans. The engineer builds reusable abstractions so product teams can launch new offerings and pricing tests without handling billing internals.
What you would do
- Design and maintain the billing platform and monetization systems behind every paid feature
- Drive features from problem framing through design, build, and rollout
- Run subscription, invoicing, and usage-metered billing at large consumer and enterprise scale
- Raise reliability through tiered service objectives, live monitoring, and early alerting on revenue issues
- Work with finance, data, growth, security, support, and sales teams to keep billing records accurate and compliant
- Expand payment method coverage and improve approval rates across regions
- Build internal tools that help support and finance staff resolve billing problems quickly
What they asked for
- Four or more years of professional software development work
- Hands-on history building or growing systems that handle charges, payments, subscriptions, or revenue flows
- Working knowledge of payment processors, covering recurring plans, invoices, chargebacks, reversals, and event callbacks
- Track record of building custom billing tooling that could compete with commercial vendors
- Solid backend work in Python and comfort reasoning about distributed architectures
- Proficiency with PostgreSQL and using data to choose what to work on next
- Clear product sense for turning stakeholder needs into straightforward technical designs
- Strong self-direction and ownership; ships ahead of plan and pushes improvements unprompted
- Prior collaboration with finance, support, or growth partners
- Real enthusiasm for AI products and fast self-education
Nice to have
- Two or more years directly using Stripe APIs and client libraries
- Background with metered pricing that counts agent operations, tokens, or unconventional units
- Familiarity with Apple and Google Play purchase flows
- Exposure to growth testing and self-serve software pricing
- Experience creating platform features that support price experiments and split tests
- Full-stack skills with Next.js, React, or TypeScript
- Work in heavily regulated payment or compliance settings
- Past employment at a rapidly scaling startup or a team with broad ownership
