Duolingo

Senior Engineering Manager, Product

Leads a software engineering team on Duolingo's learning or monetization pillar, pairing with product partners on strategy and experiment-driven delivery.

The role

This role leads a group of software engineers within one of two product areas: the core lesson experience, or the monetization side covering subscriptions, ads, and in-app purchases. The manager shares ownership of direction with a product counterpart and is measured on how well learner-facing work moves key numbers. Both New York and Pittsburgh are listed as locations.

What you would do

  • Share leadership of a cross-functional squad with a product manager, agreeing on strategy, priorities, and how success is measured.
  • Own features from scoping through build, experiment design, analysis, and long-term upkeep, keeping systems dependable and observable.
  • Design controlled tests with data partners and turn their findings into product changes aimed at core metrics.
  • Recruit a varied engineering bench, give direct feedback, coach people, and plan growth paths for each engineer.
  • Establish code and process standards that weigh velocity against maintainability, and keep technical debt, quality, and operations in check.
  • Work alongside product, design, research, and sibling engineering groups to ship experiences that serve learners and lift business results.
  • Set team objectives and key results, sharpen priorities, and clear the obstacles that slow engineers down.

What they asked for

  • Track record leading and growing a group of software engineers, including hiring and retaining strong people.
  • Has shipped projects spanning several engineers and multiple weeks or longer, with measurable business results and a balance of pace and rigor.
  • Product judgment and comfort in heavily experimental, metric-driven settings, including defining metrics and running split tests with analytics or data science teammates.
  • Strong communicator across engineering, product, design, and data who writes crisp documentation and keeps stakeholders current with progress reports.
  • Enough hands-on technical knowledge to steer architecture choices, raise quality bars, and coach engineers on good practice.
  • CS degree or a similar technical background
  • Willing to be based in Pittsburgh or New York, either by relocating or already living there.

Nice to have

  • Has led cross-functional groups focused on core outcomes in consumer products.
  • Has set objectives and operating rhythms that consistently produce outsized results at the company level.
  • Comfortable making progress amid uncertainty and running teams or projects with broad cross-team scope.
