Engineering Manager, Product

The role

This engineering manager sits in the Out-of-App area of Duolingo's Growth pillar, responsible for timing and delivering learner messages at very large scale. The role co-leads the team alongside a product manager and works closely with data science and ML partners. It covers both product outcomes and the reliability of the underlying notification system.

What you would do

• Align with a product counterpart on team strategy, priorities, and success metrics
• Guide projects from specification through build, experimentation, and long-term upkeep
• Keep notification infrastructure dependable, scalable, and observable
• Design and analyze A/B tests to move key product metrics
• Recruit, develop, and keep engineers, including coaching and career growth
• Establish engineering quality bars and manage technical debt and operational health
• Partner with product, design, research, and other engineering groups on user-facing work
• Set team OKRs and clear away blockers for the team

• Proven experience leading and hiring a team of software engineers
• History of delivering multi-week, multi-engineer projects with measurable business results
• Solid product judgment and familiarity with metric definition and experimentation
• Strong written and verbal communication across engineering, product, design, and data
• Enough technical depth to steer architecture decisions and mentor engineers
• CS degree or a similar technical background
• Ability to work from, or move to, New York, NY

• Experience leading cross-functional teams on core outcomes in consumer products
