Discord

Senior Product Design Manager, Growth

Leads a design team shaping how new users discover Discord, sign up, get onboarded, and get pulled back through notifications.

The role

This manager owns the earliest stretch of the consumer experience, covering search-driven discovery, account creation, first-run education, and re-engagement alerts. The role reports into product design leadership and runs a group of designers working across acquisition, activation, and retention.

What you would do

  • Grow and lead a group of product designers focused on acquisition, activation, and re-engagement
  • Drive strategy through persuasive narrative and vision efforts that frame hard problems as product bets with staged experiments
  • Weigh growth speed against user benefit and craft quality so launches stay effective and responsible
  • Set a high bar for visual polish and build small moments of delight while protecting user control and trust
  • Work alongside product, engineering, and data science leaders to agree on direction and delivery
  • Promote evidence-based design by blending research, analytics, and product thinking across the team

What they asked for

  • 10+ years designing at scale for consumer digital products, ideally in growth, onboarding, or lifecycle work
  • 4+ years managing design teams of at least four people with a record of developing talent
  • Skill at distilling messy problems into clear, compelling product direction
  • Hands-on experience with acquisition, activation, or lifecycle design and how early moments affect retention
  • Able to influence peers and senior executives toward decisions and better execution
  • Empathetic leadership that supports direct reports while pushing for strong results
  • Comfortable making tradeoffs under ambiguity between business targets and user value
  • Working knowledge of AI-assisted design tools and the judgment to know when outputs need human refinement

Nice to have

  • Regular use of Discord or gaming background
  • Familiarity with growth experimentation methods and data-led iteration
  • Understanding of how products gain users through notifications, search optimization, onboarding, and sharing loops
  • Background in behavioral science, habit formation, or motivation
