Engineering Manager, Safety

Leads a nine-engineer safety group running automated content review, enforcement, appeals, and investigator tooling for a large gaming-focused chat platform.

The role

This manager oversees three squads that handle automated moderation decisions, enforcement actions with warnings and appeals infrastructure, and internal tools for investigators. The position reports to a director and partners closely with operations, ML, policy, and legal groups. The scope is expected to expand as the team grows.

What you would do

  • Direct three tech leads and their squads across automated review, enforcement, and appeals
  • Move the majority of review decisions to automation while preserving accuracy measured against human reviewers
  • Redesign the appeals process so every eligible case follows one path and quality is scored, not just disagreement flagged
  • Build investigator tools that shorten complex case work and make the history of a user's enforcement state easy to trace
  • Handle regulatory and child-safety compliance work in parallel with the product roadmap
  • Set engineering standards and recruit and develop the team

What they asked for

  • 5+ years as a software engineer with strong backend and distributed systems experience
  • 2+ years managing engineers
  • Hands-on experience shipping LLM-based systems whose outputs drive real business actions
  • Working knowledge of evaluation methods, labeled data, quality regressions, and cost/latency tradeoffs
  • Able to review designs and debug incidents while letting senior engineers own technical decisions
  • Experience partnering with human review or operations teams, including QA, reviewer calibration, and appeals
  • Composed under pressure when deadlines, incidents, or regulator scrutiny arise
  • Strong cross-functional communication and a coaching-oriented management style

Nice to have

  • Enthusiasm for the platform and the gaming community it serves
  • Background in trust and safety, fraud prevention, integrity, or abuse-prevention engineering at a consumer product
  • Prior work building internal tools used mainly by operations or review staff
  • Experience consolidating legacy systems or overseeing outsourced operations vendors
