Engineering Manager, Platform Security

The role

This role sits within Discord's Platform Security Engineering group, which builds the internal systems engineers use to ship software safely. The manager will set security direction across the company and guide a largely self-directed team that works closely with many other engineering groups.

What you would do

• Set company-wide security priorities and choose the highest-impact areas to address
• Establish hardened baselines for all cloud environments and oversee their protection
• Reduce infrastructure weaknesses across a very large group of developers
• Protect software from dependency sources through build pipelines into production
• Design identity systems for people and automated workloads that limit access appropriately
• Advise on design reviews, threat modeling, and code review while weighing practical tradeoffs

• Track record of coaching engineers and building diverse, inclusive teams
• 3+ years securing products serving millions of users
• Ability to author a team roadmap rather than only execute one
• Hands-on experience with cloud platforms including GCP, Cloudflare, and AWS
• Strong ability to reason about security in complicated and unfamiliar systems
• Programming experience in Python, TypeScript, or Rust
• Working knowledge of agentic AI development and AI security practices

Nice to have

• Knowledge of authentication and authorization models such as RBAC, OAuth, zero trust, and mTLS
• Experience with infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD tooling
• Familiarity with container orchestration and serverless runtimes
• Experience operating a commercial security platform
