Applied AI Engineer, Beneficial Deployments (Life Sciences)

Builds production AI agents and reusable tooling embedded with life sciences research institutions to speed scientific discovery.

The role

This role sits in a newly formed applied AI group within the Beneficial Deployments area, which works with nonprofits and mission-driven organizations. The engineer works side by side with partner research institutions, building agents into their daily scientific operations rather than advising from a distance. The position also produces shared infrastructure that other institutions can adopt.

What you would do

  • Embed with leading life sciences research organizations to map their scientific workflows from start to finish.
  • Move projects from early prototypes into production systems that become part of everyday research work.
  • Build reusable connectors for domain data sources such as genomics platforms, literature databases, and experiment repositories.
  • Create scientifically grounded evaluation benchmarks and reusable agent skills that other groups can adopt without starting over.
  • Surface the hard problems of deploying AI in biology, such as messy heterogeneous data and audit needs, and share findings with product, engineering, and research teams.
  • Write documentation and technical guides so partners can self-serve and results scale without heavy hand-holding.

What they asked for

  • Four or more years shipping production software or working as a forward-deployed engineer or technical founder.
  • Substantive research background in life sciences, biomedical work, or computational science.
  • Hands-on experience building LLM-based applications, including prompt design, context management, agent design, and evaluation.
  • Proven delivery of dependable software in a hands-on engineering role.
  • Resourceful mindset that thrives on varied tasks, builds from zero, and provides direction when situations are unclear.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field.

Nice to have

  • Background in genomics, neuroscience, or drug discovery.
  • Comfort engaging deeply with academic researchers on technical topics.
